All of the talk surrounding the Tennessee Titans this offseason centered around their offense, and their new exotic smash mouth approach this season.
But after two games, it’s the defense that’s doing the smashing.
Here is a stat that you will rarely, if ever read again….
Heading into week 3, the Titans’ offense has allowed more touchdowns this season (2) than their defense (1), and one could argue that the Titans would be 2-0 right now if not for the offense’s contribution.
After a shaky preseason in which the first team defense allowed an opening drive touchdown in all three games, the Titans are finally hitting their stride on d.
Two weeks ago the defense shut down Vikings running back Adrian Peterson to the tune of 31 yards…on less than two yards per carry. They pitched a first half shutout and held Minnesota’s offense out of the end zone all afternoon.
Last Sunday the Titans held Detroit’s vaunted offense to just 15 points in their comeback victory. The Lions put up 39 on the Colts a week earlier.
Tennessee’s defense kept another high-profile offensive threat in check last week.
Matthew Stafford was under siege all afternoon. The Titans registered six qb hits, four sacks, and an interception while holding one of the best passing teams in the league to less than 240 yards through the air.
Currently tied for 9th in scoring defense, the Titans face yet another challenge this Sunday when the Oakland Raiders bring their high-powered offense to Nissan Stadium.
Not only are the Raiders scoring over 30 points per game, but they are also leading the league in total yards.
A perfect litmus test for defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau and company.
The Titans have proven to be able to slow down a smash mouth run offense, as well as a spread-em-out passing offense the last two games.
But Oakland can do both, averaging 309 yards passing and 161 yards rushing so far this season.
Tennessee has to be feeling confident on defense heading into this game, as the Raiders will be confident on offense.
A great game within the game to watch this Sunday.
